The hummingbird is a small South American endangered bird: it flies at 100km/h backwards, it is lighter than a cigarette, it moves it wings 80 times per second and it has a heartbeat of 1260 beats per minute. It feeds on a special fuel: a flower’s nectar! It has to eat, in order to survive enough nectar that results in 8 times its weight, more than 1500 flowers per day. It is in this way that it became the pollinator of 85% of the Amazon Rainforest. Without hummingbirds, the Amazon will die, with apocalyptic consequences on the entire globe.

The Scientific Institution “Centro Colibrì” in Trieste hosts the last couples for reproduction of the world which have been donated by South-American governments to the Italian government. From the studies collected about these “Italian” hummingbirds, it will be possible to raise them also in the wilderness, and save them from extinction.

Today this hummingbirds, which have reproduced in Trieste, are about to die because of the Italian Government!

Today (December 2010), the Minister for the Environment Stefania Prestigiacomo declared: “Stop!, We won’t give no more public contribution for those birds”, even if it costed the government less than €40,000: less than a local botanic garden. The Minister for the Environment, with the help of the “Corpo Forestale”, will try to transfer them, to make them die silently away from the eyes of the public. In this way, not even “Le Iene” and the “CNN” will be able to document the tragedy.

The life of these animals are in the hands of Stefania Prestigiacomo.

I pray you, ask her to change her mind, please send an email to Stefania Prestigiacomo.

Let’s save the last hummingbirds “ex-situ” of the world

Let’s ask her to stop the lethal transfer of these animals!
